One of the best things about the internet is the fact that it gives content creators and artists a platform to showcase their art in a way that was not possible before. An example of this is Marvin De Guzman and FlatArtPh. Marvin is a full-time student and part-time entrepreneur and freelance artist. Online he is known for his art that produces “simplicity through line”, Marvin’s illustrations strip away the fluff and focus on the heart of the visual through his unique line art creations.
Marvin, who is currently a student at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, started the business out of a need to support himself while studying from home during the height of the pandemic.
“The main reason I started to monetize my art and consider it my business was because of my situation during this pandemic. My parents couldn’t afford to buy me a gadget that I needed to further my studies because of the way the world works now with all the technological advancements brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic,” he shared.
“I said to myself, ‘I’m going to help my parents and I’m not going to make them feel like they have to support me if I can support myself and help them somehow at the same time. My passion, which I have treasured and reserved over the past few years, is the core of FlatArtPh and the reason I started it as a business Due to Covid-19 I have the opportunity and the freedom to draw, manage, and interact frequently with that account. That’s where I’ve been spending my free time and energy for a year and a half now,” he added.
The public financial management major is also inspired by her desire to provide for her family and afford a better future.
Marvin De Guzman’s illustrations in FlatArtPh eliminate the fluff and focus on the heart of the visual with his unique line art designs.
“My family, as well as my future, inspired me to turn my passion into a business, where I accept commissions for artwork. When I consider my future, I will consider the need to support myself and those in my family. I do to be both my passion and a growing business. It’s my passion, and I’ve wanted to do it since I was in high school. When I have free time in class , I always draw just about anything. As a stress reliever, I would draw my friends. It’s basically what I do to maintain my sanity. Now that I’m earning a decent amount of money from my art, I always think about why I started doing what I do, which is producing art and making art for people and bringing their ideas to life.”
Its success is both surprising and humbling, “I never imagined that my Instagram would grow and that so many people would contact me to commission an artwork. Some people will ask me to create an artwork for them in which I combine and integrate their photos so that they seem to be physically together, as a memorial for their loved ones, an illustration of their family and loved ones, their pets, etc. Their trust in me to apply my art to capture their incredible moments makes me happy and encourages me to keep doing what I love to do.”
When asked why he chose line art, he was quick to say, “I will always choose simplicity above all else. Although I have different artistic styles, line art is the place to be. where the FlatArtPh is known. I would be honest and say that Pinterest has influenced me to create this style of art. I would consider my line art as a minimalist nature that is full of emotions, shapes, lines, of different figures and movements. Personally, I love minimalism and it influences my art. My line art can be displayed anywhere due to its minimal artwork which can complement anywhere.”
And for Marvin, he thinks the best is yet to come: “I like to make people happy through my art. It makes me happy when they are happy with the art I have created by collaborating with them. Bringing life to their ideas and hearing their stories behind the artwork they wanted me to make for them is what I enjoyed the most because that’s what art means to me, there’s a story behind every piece of art I’ve created. These are my ultimate dreams for my business. I want people to know that my art isn’t just art they see on their screens and on the media social – behind my art there is a story to tell, and it will always speak for itself.”
When asked what the next step is for him, Marvin pauses and then smiles sincerely: “FlatArtPh will always create and grow with my small community with all the people who are interested in my art. I will persevere and work tirelessly to achieve my goals in life. I will continue to do what I loved doing and I will always remember why I started. FlatArtPh will always be FlatArtPh making people happy by bringing their ideas to life. FlatArtPh will continue to tell a story through the arts. for more people to interact with it, it influences my creative process. I want to inspire people to do what they love to do and step out of their comfort zone and explore what the universe can offer them. I believe that if there is a will, there is definitely a way for it to make your dream come true.”
