Shorai™ Sans is a geometric sans that retains subtle shading and nearly limitless applicability in a wide range of uses, from publishing and advertising to websites and technology.

WOBURN, Mass., March 9, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Monotype today announced the release of Shorai Sans, signifying a new era of legibility in Japanese characters. Shorai Sans is Monotype’s second Japanese typeface, after Tazugane Gothic, and is an easy-to-use typeface that optimizes the balance between Japanese and European text and character spacing. The result has elegance, character and expression, and meets the needs and expectations of designers in a modern world.

Shorai balances the subtlety of traditional hand-drawn brushstrokes with sharp, geometric outlines. Without an intellectual-looking serif, Shorai’s streamlined letterforms and extensive weight ranges offer creatives a holistic branding solution.

Shorai Sans was designed as a complementary typeface to Avenir® Next, designed to work harmoniously in modern global designs, while preserving the essence of Japanese writing. Shorai goes beyond existing Japanese sans serifs to offer a wide range of expressions and personalities that designers can play with. Conceived by Yukihiro Nakamura, Akira Kobayashi, Ryota Doiand the Monotype Studio, Shorai Sans opens up new horizons for Japanese typography.

“We strove to make the heavyweight much heavier than an average Japanese sans, and stripped each shape to its essence that revealed true simplicity. That’s what we have now – it’s a sans for a new generation. says Monotype’s Creative Type Director Akira Kobayashi.

Typographer Ryota Doi adds: “by Yukihiro Nakamura the ideas are always surprising and exciting. Shorai Sans is a typeface that has evolved over generations. It’s simple but still elegantly reflects handwritten strokes – Shorai presents itself as a Japanese typeface of the future with its rugged simplicity and human touch.”

After the successful launch of Tazugane Gothic in January 2017, the demand for sans serif fonts in the Japanese market has steadily increased – especially in the automotive industry which demands fonts that exude solidity and confidence. This is where Shorai will find its place in the future, while offering many options for technology and telecom brands.
