Police investigate after discovery of swastika drawings in Mount Lebanon school

An investigation is underway after two images of swastikas were found in a bathroom at Jefferson Middle School in the Mount Lebanon School District.

Principal Sarah Shaw sent a letter to families on Tuesday alerting them to the second drawing. The first drawing was found on March 2 and an investigation with the Mount Lebanon Police Department began immediately, according to a previous letter.

“The administration will take appropriate disciplinary action for those found responsible for this incident,” Shaw said in the March 9 message.

The swastika symbol of the German Nazi Party during WWII is often used by modern-day hate groups to express anti-Semitism. Shaw said the use of the symbol will be discussed with students, and she also shared Anti-Defamation League resources on discussing prejudice and prejudice with children.

“We appreciate that Jefferson Middle School includes students and families from many backgrounds,” Shaw wrote. “We have and will continue to act quickly to resolve any issues that violate our non-discrimination policies and practices. There is zero tolerance for discriminatory behavior in our school.

“If you have any information that would assist us in our investigation, please contact the MLPD or the school administration.”
