The Loewentheil Collection announces its first virtual exhibition of selections from the world’s largest and finest collection of old photographs from China.

“Seizing the Shadows: Rare Photographs of the Masters of the Late Qing Dynasty, a virtual exhibition in English and Chinese, is the first exhibition dedicated to the photographs of the first Chinese photographers. The photographs were taken from the years 1860 to 1903.

The virtual exhibition is filled with engaging multimedia content that includes never before digitized or published photographs by Chinese master photographers from the late Qing dynasty. Captivating realistic animations preserve the aesthetics of the original photographs, and educational videos and descriptive text place these rare 150-year-old photographs in the context of China’s artistic, cultural and dynastic history. The modern digital edition plays with the visual perspective of these photographs, giving visitors the experience of exploring and learning about the people, cities and landscapes of 19th century China.

The exhibit features ancient photographs of sites and peoples in late Qing Dynasty China as well as images of ancient Chinese art that influenced these photographers. Visitors can zoom in and out of images created 150 years ago in China with the wet-plate collodion process. This early and demanding photographic process, used by early Chinese photographers, captured images on glass in intricate detail. A video in the exhibit illustrates the process. The selection of photographic masterpieces from the Loewentheil collection in this virtual exhibition is part of the history of photography and part of the long Chinese cultural heritage of poetry, music, art, etc.

The exhibition is inspired by the Loewentheil collection, which has been built up over more than three decades. The collection comprises approximately 14,000 photographs spanning the early days of paper photography from the 1850s to the 1930s, with the majority dating from before 1900.
